Backgammon is a popular gaming sport since ancient times. However, it acquired its official name recently. Backgammon enjoyed its status in the historic times. Again, with the popularity of Internet in 1990’s, Online Backgammon emerged as a popular online game for people across the world.

Backgammon dates its origins 5000 years back. Evidences site that the Egyptians, the Greeks and the Romans played Backgammon however, it was identified with different names then. The game that is played today was refined in the 17th century by English people. This was the time when it acquired the name Backgammon. Since then Backgammon is a member of board games family and is one of the oldest classes of board games in the world. In the 20th century, addition of doubling cube was significant and remarkable innovation in Backgammon. However, in the 1990’s with the popularity of Internet, Online Backgammon gained huge attractiveness.
Set up of Online Backgammon:
Similar to land-based Backgammon, Online Backgammon game set up consists of:
- A layout or a board.
- Set of checkers, 2 different colors, 15 for each player, who are referred as ‘men’.
- Set of dice, one for each player.
- Set dice cups.
- Doubling cube.
Backgammon is played with 15 checkers on a board consisting of 24 spaces and points. The points are grouped into four quadrants and are referred as player’s home board and opponents’ outer board. These boards are separated from each other by a ridge called as bar.
The points for numbering purposes start from a player’s home board. Each player has 15 checkers of different colors. The initial set up of a checker is as follows:
- 2on 24 points.
- 5 on 13 points.
- 3 on 8 points.
- 5 on 6 points.
Both the players will have their own pair of dice and a dice cup. However, a doubling cube with numbers 2,4,8,16,32 and 64 inscribed on its faces helps to track the status of the Online Backgammon game.
The main goal of player here is to bring all men into the home board, and then remove the opponent’s men. The player who will kick all the men off the board is the winner in this game.
