Blackjack History
Researchers are not fortunate enough to discover the tracings of Blackjack.

However, many say that, Blackjack originated in France during the 17th century, where Vingt En Un game was played widely in casinos. In French, this game means 21.

Vingt en Un game was a bit similar to the game of Blackjack except certain minor differences. Unlike modern Blackjack, only the trader was allowed for doubling. The gambling way was such that after every round, you have to place a bet.

Blackjack got its name from a bet, which paid 10:1, if the first two cards that a player gets are spade jack and spade ace.

In 1953, Roger Baldwin along with his comrades first attempted to study Blackjack. They made use of calculating methods and statistical theory for reducing house edge of this game.

They published the findings of game in American Statistical Association (ASA) with title as Optimum Strategy in Blackjack. This strategy guide was the published in the year 1956 and was the first book of its kind.

Professor Edward O. Thorp studied Blackjack using science and math. Thorp polished his findings by using fresh calculating machines and systems. In 1962, he published a book called 'Beat the Dealer', which mentioned details of the game's card counting method.

This book achieved tremendous popularity and thus achieved first place in the bestseller list of New York Times. The work of Thorp had a great impact on players mind and this became a revolution in the history of Blackjack. After the launching of this book, casinos of U.S. formulated plans for reducing the damage and thus modified the rules of Blackjack.

Casinos made certain modifications for increasing their odds. Therefore, they introduced shuffling machines, early and frequent shuffling, and multiple decks among various other changes. Until late 80's, Blackjack was one of the most played card game in casinos.

An IBN worker, Julian Braun, made use of his computer knowledge by studying Blackjack using a simulator. This was yet another major contribution to this popular card game. His contribution was published in the book Beat the Dealer's second edition.

A book named "Playing Blackjack as a Business" published by Lawrence Revere inspired and attracted thousands of Blackjack players.

Ken Uston is regarded as the hero of Blackjack in the history, because he encouraged many people for studying his book The Big Player, Ken Uston on Blackjack, and Million Dollar Blackjack.

Presently, Blackjack is one such game that is widely played around the globe including Canada, Europe, U.S., Australia, and several other places across the globe. In addition, at present, Internet Blackjack has gained tremendous popularity since the past few years and will definitely continue as a classic game.
