Craps History |
 |
|
Craps is a modified version of an ancient game Hazard, which was created by Bernard de Mandeville. The game was first devised in the year 1813 in New Orleans, United States of America. The game started gaining popularity and was simplified and given a new name as Craps.
Some believed that Sir William of Tyre, who was an Englishman, devised the game. He invented Hazard along with his knights, while on crusades. It is believed that Hazard was a favorite pastime for crusaders, while they were laying sieges at the castle Asart or Hazarth in 1125 AD.
Hazard became popular and got recognition as an English game. During the 17th century, casinos started including Hazard. Later on, French people also started playing Hazard. French people also claim to give Hazard the name of Craps. However, there no proper evidence that supports this claim.
Some people claim that French people bestowed on this game to the U.S., while some believe that Britishers originated this game and the simplification took place in the U.S.
According to some experts, the African-Americans developed and invented Craps in the 19th century. Some people even say that the word Craps came from a French pronunciation called Crabs.
Craps was played extensively on the riverboats in Mississippi and from there it became popular all over the America. In addition, John H Winn, a dice maker, devised this game to help players bet with or against the shooter.
Winn is regarded as the founder of modernistic Craps, as he incorporated the game with Big 6 and Big 8, tables and layouts, and Pass Bets and Don’t Pass Bets. In short, Winn altered the entire face Craps.
As Craps is recognized widely, many filmmakers have incorporated Craps in their movies. Presently, Craps is one of the amazing games in the gambling world because of the high rolls.
